Radio repairs

[Today’s run: White House 3.4 miles]

A couple of evenings this week we have worked on the old console radio that my wife picked up.  We have been replacing capacitors.  The yellow ones and the black/white ones are new.  This is about half of them.

Wax/paper capacitors go bad over time just sitting around.  A radio this old, they are all assumed to be bad.  New ones are 50 cents each, more or less.

So for this radio we will be in for all new capacitors and almost all new tubes.  We have yet to test the voice-coil speaker.  We may end up replacing that as well.  The other coils should be ok.  The tuning capacitor should be ok.  Power and IF transformers should be ok.  But we shall see.

We have the schematic.  In theory we could build one of these from scratch.  But in practice it doesn’t work that way.  So we will replace the obvious stuff and then see what we get.  From there it will be troubleshooting: finding individual problems and fixing them.
