September is coming to an end.
I got myself signed up for Medicare and received a card for part A. If my retirement happens on schedule at the end of the year I will start taking social security and sign up for the alternative add-ons to Medicare.
I’d made some good progress on my project last week then got some new information late in the week which sets me back a bit. But I just need to accumulate the gumption and get it done.
I think my career realignment toward programming has been an interesting exercise. I can’t claim to be an amazing programmer, my source code usually lacks the multi-layered subroutine structure that is usually the style these days (probably following single-page-subroutine style as Knuth advocated in his Metafont and TeX systems).
I feel like I was more effective in the environment where I had some corrective collaboration on a regular basis. Probably the most fun was shortly after Covid when I was doing one-off demonstrations, translating another guy’s python implementations into C++. I’m a bit haunted at the current job because I’m probably not doing things optimally for a longer term production code base, and I have to pull teeth to get any kind of review or design collaboration.
But I’m figuring things out and I’m not on the critical path for future sales or whatnot. TSo they are selling the current product in a non-upgrade-able configuration and I have sorted out some of the issues to get the upgrade-able feature implemented.
I’d like to check in with the people in Ft. Collins in the next month or so to see if they finally finished the system replacement project. This was the system that I fled in 2019 on the cusp of the first (failed) replacement project. So it went on another 7 years.
