Water line repair

[Thursday: 3.5 miles, Saturday: 5.5 miles]

A week ago last Saturday I worked on patching a leak in our water service line.  This is the line which runs from the meter to the house.  Our meter is out in the front yard near the street.

Here is a picture of the problem:  a crack in the shoulder of the molded joint in some long lengths of PVC pipe.  This was buried about 15 inches in the ground.  It was causing a mild “gusher” of water bubbling up to the surface.  The natural joint-bump is on the right.  The dark line on the left of the joint is the crack.

I happen to have a tool for turning off our water at the meter.  I used that to turn this off. I put in a temporary repair coupling for a couple of days, then on the following Saturday I cut out about a foot of the pipe and installed a new chunk of  3/4″ PVC using two joint connectors.  I got it all buried again and things look good now.  It will take a few months for my dirt work to subside and the grass to grow over it again.
