[Today’s run: about 4 miles]

Yesterday was the Marathon.  It was a long day, and the weather was warmer than expected so the marathon participants had a tough go.  But we got through it and had a quiet evening and good night’s sleep.

This morning I went for a jog here in Superior, WI on a bike path along the water front.  It’s not as exciting as the north shore over in Duluth, more industrial.  But they have a nice bike path.

I’ve spent a few hours trying to get my VPN working between here and home.  I am able to get into a computer at home and access the router setup screens.  I have not yet found a combination of settings that actually works.  But we have had quite a bit of down time and it was something I’ve needed to work on.  No success yet.  I need to eventually have VPN if I want to do my radio station program work while away from home.  For this trip I did it all in advance.    (VPN means “virtual private network”.  It would let me use my laptop while on the road as if I were connected to the network at home but still keep “bad guys” out.)

Duluth is a nice town, built on a big south-facing bluff overlooking the lake.  Superior is to the south, on a flat plain.  Most of the nice houses are in Duluth and it looks like most of the heavy industry is in Superior.  Superior is on the “south side of the tracks” except that “the tracks” are water ways.  Our hotel is in Superior.  It is a newer building but it looks like it was built on the site of an older motel.  There are still signs of the older motel and parking lot layout, etc.  including an office-like building which is empty.  I don’t know why it is half-baked like this.  Much of what we have seen of Superior feels that way.

Duluth is large enough to have a multi-storied downtown area, a few blocks wide and many blocks long.

I have a friend from college who is active on facebook.  He and his wife are coming to this area for their annual week-long vacation in cabins on the north shore.  We are going to get together for dinner this evening.
