What I know about the Holocaust

[Today’s run: rest day]

I was reading last week about some school district in California wanted kids to write a paper using Internet research to argue for or against the existence of the holocaust (where German Nazi’s killed millions of civilians, particularly Jews, during WW2)

I was born in the early 1960’s.  I was not alive during WW2 and have no first-hand knowledge of the events at that time.  I’ve read various things… probably comes down to about what you would find if you used Wikipedia.

I don’t think I know anybody who was there as a victim… not that I can think of.  (If I’ve missed anybody, I apologize.)

But I did run into someone who was there.  In 7th grade I attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High in Des Moines, IA.  My teacher for English was Mr. Drake.  He was a small person, I remember him being very thin, and old, but energetic.   He had a strong personality.  He was a good teacher.

Toward the end of the school year, it may have been the last class session of the year, he passed around pictures in our class.  They were pictures of piles of bodies.  He said he was there during the “liberation” of a concentration camp.  I think he told us which camp it was, but I don’t remember.  He was very emotional about it, which was very unusual.   He told us that people even then (30? years later) were trying to deny that it happened.  He wanted us to know that he had seen it.
