Not Much, You?

[today’s run: zero]

I’ve been learning a lot about the radio business.

Shows that appear on my local NPR station can be purchased for play on the air.  I didn’t know that.

Corporation for Public Broadcasting dishes out some money from the federal budget to some PBS stations.

Is a PBS station (on the radio) the same thing as an NPR station?  I think so.  Not sure.

It is also possible to buy independently created (“produced”) shows on a couple of different radio-show-bazaar websites.

There are other groupings of non-profit stations, both PBS/NPR and others which create and pass around their own content.

So it turns out there is quite a bit of for-sale radio content hanging about.  Some of it I have even heard, but I didn’t know it.  Shows like “The Story”, which we get on our NPR station, are compilations that include independently produced segments.  Interesting stuff.

There are a handful of organizations whose purpose in life is to promote local LPFM radio stations.  And they have been invaluable to me in trying to figure out how to apply and what needs to happen.
