[Today’s run: 6.25 miles]
In a couple of weeks my wife and I are going to drive up to Iowa for our vacation. We have already bought some entry tickets to the Iowa State Fair.
When I was in high school I worked during the summers on a cleaning crew at the state fairgrounds. All summer long we had the place to ourselves, more or less. Then the fair time would come and for 10 days it was a hive of activity, people everywhere. And then it was gone again (and time to get back to school).
The funny part is, when the fair was actually in progress we didn’t really have much to do. I spent one year assigned to sit on a bench in the Cattle Barn with some other guys. A couple times a day we would sweep the main aisle through the barn. We also would “scoop” up after the cows on that main aisle. Otherwise, just sat and watched people go by. (4-5 times during the fair they would gather up all of us to spend an evening at complete muck-out of one of the barns… so it wasn’t exclusively fun and games.)
Anyway, I’m looking forward to wandering around, watching 4-H kids show their cows, eating a corn dog, and watching the exhibit bee hive. If I had a week to sit on a bench all day, I might be tempted.
