May 14 you will find my kid sister and myself toe-ing the line for the Magnolia Meltdown. This is a half marathon (and a 10K & 5K) in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Gun time is 6:30 am. Early o’clock. It has to be early o’clock! May in Mississippi the temps are already getting pretty toasty and if you don’t get an early start on things, you really do melt!
This is going to be an exciting day for my sister. This will be her very first Half Marathon! I’m super excited for her!!!
In the past, she’s done the odd 5K here and there and a few 10K’s but has been kind of spotty with her running. This past year, she’s buckled down and gotten serious/consistent. She committed herself to doing a HM (Half Marathon) and the date is almost here!
Now, we are not going to run it together. She has given me strict instructions to run my race. My pace. She’ll run her race. Her pace. After asking a zillion times, she has assured me that this is exactly what she wants….AND I’m supposed to finish enough ahead of her to get a finish line pic of her.
I’ll do my best on that last part. LOL!!!
About a month ago, registration for the Mississippi Blues Marathon opened. The race made a big hoo-rah about it. 2017 will be the 10th anniversary for this race and they want to do it up big! So….
When they opened registration, they said that the first 100 people who signed up would be able to run the marathon for $10.00. Yup. Ten bucks for a full! That’s a pretty good deal!
So, when the registration time arrived, my sister and a whole bunch of other Mississippi runners, were parked by their laptops trying to get in for the $10.00. My sister made it! Bells and Whistles to her!!!
Next January, she will be running her first full as well! BOOM!
I am a sad panda in that I won’t be able to run “The Blues” in 2017. I have a 100 miler first weekend of February and The Blues is too close to race day for me to be able to run. My sister has asked me to volunteer and request to work the finish line so I can see her finish her first full. You know that I am going to do that, right!? Wouldn’t miss it for the world!!!
