Home Baked Bread and My Husband’s Pet Peeve

Today’s Run:  Mowing  (3 hrs of mowing)

I bake all our bread.  I am not so good at rolls but at bread, I rock (according to MFH~My Favorite Husband).

We are planning a trip and although we will be absent from our home, our son will be staying at the house and babysitting all our critters.  We have five hens, two cats, one dog and five honey bee hives.  The bee hives are self sufficient but all the others take a little bit of effort.

Enter the bread.

Each morning, I go out to the chickens to collect eggs, freshen their water and put out 22% protein layer pellet, oyster shell for calcium (we want nice strong eggs shells) and grit for good digestion.  The other thing I MUST take to the hens is some of my bread.  If I go empty handed in the bread department, they get upset!  Upset hens are not good layers.  Spoiled rotten chickens is what they are.

Where my husband comes into play in all of this is…”What are you doing giving homemade bread to ChIcKeNs!?!”.  They are ChIcKeNs!

He feels strongly about this.

So, I do my best to make sure we never, ever, run out of bread.  I usually bake twice a week.  It really is no problem.  You just mix the stuff up and let it rise~twice and then toss it in the oven.  Simple, really!

Which brings us back to our little jaunt out of town and my son.  There is no way I would send him empty handed to those birds without bread.  They would flay him alive!  When I say they get grouchy without their bread, I am not kidding!  My husband does not think that I need to bake but is resigned to the fact that I will.  I have budgeted my time on the last day before we leave to include baking time.  Not a problem!

Happy chickens is a must!
