Tomorrow is race day. Tomorrow is the Berlin Marathon!
My sister and I arrived in Berlin on Wednesday. We left Columbus, Mississippi, around 10:00am Tuesday morning. I had been sooo excited that I woke up at 2:30am and couldn’t get back to sleep.
When my sister and my BIL pulled up for the drive to Birmingham, Alabama, and the airport, I was bouncing all over the place. I was READY to travel! I knew that I was going to be hating myself for being up so early but to be honest, there really wasn’t a thing I could do about it. *sigh*
We arrived in Birmingham, went through TSA, grabbed a bite to eat and settled in to wait for our first flight to Chicago.
We had a short (and I mean about an hour) layover in Chicago to catch our connecting flight to Munich. We had to change terminals in Chicago. It was a hurried walk through O’Hare but we made it and settled in on the plane for the long flight to Germany.
Munich was just as harried as O’Hare. We had an hour to get off the plane, go through customs and find our connecting flight to Berlin. Lucky for us this flight was running a little bit behind schedule so we actually ended up waiting a little bit. The down time was nice because he had been worried about missing the flight.
We arrived in Berlin after not sleeping the entire 19 hour flight time. We. Were. Toast. Our luggage made it so we were happy!
Before leaving home, MFH (My Favorite Husband) had printed off little “business cards” with the name and address of our hotel. He did that because last year our cab driver took us to the wrong hotel and I didn’t want to mess with ending up in the wrong place again.
We hailed a cab and the airport and I gave the little card to the taxi driver. He drove is to our hotel. No problem! EXCEPT, when we went into the hotel we found out that I had messed up when I made our reservations. We didn’t have reservations for that night. Our reservations didn’t start until the next night! Uh-oh!
The hotel didn’t have any openings for that evening but they helped us find a place to stay for that evening. We came back the next morning and checked into our original hotel. Boy, oh boy, I really messed that up, didn’t I? It all worked out okay in the end so we were happy about that.
The day we arrived, after checking into our substitute hotel, we did a little bit of sightseeing and went out for dinner. The restaurant hailed us a cab and we drove back to the substitute hotel. It was only a 5-10 minute drive but I was fast asleep by the time we reached the hotel. I had been up about 38 hrs straight by this time and I was very tired.
We immediately crashed and slept 13 hrs. I don’t even know if I rolled over during the night!
Since then, we’ve played tourist, gone to the Expo, met some online friends IRL for the very first time. One of those friends brought Paxton a nice red necktie! How awesome is that!?!
We also met up with some other UK friends at the Hard Rock in Berlin. We had burgers and beer and had a very nice dinner. What a treat to meet them!!!
Today is a time of resting. Tomorrow is the race. Last year I did a bit too much before the race and had some trouble on the course due to being too tired. This year I’m trying to be a tad smarter. We’ll see if it works out?
Super excited to be back in Germany again! This is the highlight of my year. Last year I fell in love with this country and this city in particular. Love it here!
