I’ve been starting on some projects for the FM radio station.
The computer I am using is ancient. And the software is something I installed 10 years ago, more or less.
I talked to a guy who is an expert with that software and he helped me formulate a plan for updating the computer. I already have a server-level Dell T430 ? system that I picked up in Wisconsin a couple of years ago. I put some new SAS disks in it. And it has 32 GB of memory and a 6 core processor. Hot swap disks… the whole shebang. Anyway, I’ve ordered a RAID controller card that will let me configure the disks as one big space. I may have to get another sound card of some sort. But I’m moving ahead with installing the latest software and copying over our library of sound files and the database of information about those files.
I’m not sure how long that will take, but it should not be a really long time.
Then I want to set up this Intel Nuc headless computer so that I can use it as my editing station remotely from my laptop in the house or on the road. I will need a sound-over-ethernet solution and I have a couple of ideas about that. I will need the new server to let the Nuc have read-only access to the sound files, probably via NFS. The new server has the horsepower to do that.
Our current playback computer is an ancient 1-core Dell desktop that was old when I installed it 10 years ago. It works. And I have it configured for software RAID for the OS and an external RAID appliance for the sound file library (8TB)
Over the weekend I advertised on Facebook in a local group to see if anyone is interested in being on our board of directors and I have at least one good prospect and a couple more expressing interest. We haven’t had a board meeting in awhile. And we’ve lost a couple of directors. So I need to restart that and see if I can be more consistent at having board meetings. Maybe one of the new directors will be gifted in the area of organization and help me do that.
