This is a house in our neighborhood. It has what probably was a porch, but they have enclosed it completely and put a stone-like material on it as siding. To me it looks like something you would use as a backsplash on a kitchen counter.

But I thought it was paradoxical because it is stone-like and there is a large crawlspace under the structure, the box being held up on three wooden posts.

It’s interesting that the footings are not at grade. I agree the stone or stone-look product appears to be the indoor type, so wonder how it will do in the weather over time.

DIY projects are so satisfying to the doer, I’m glad they don’t think about strangers critiquing their work. Although I’m wondering if the windows are openable – maybe crank style?

I’ve noticed such material being used for backsplash and the location makes no sense to me. It must destroy sponges used to clean it of grease and oil. Glossy smooth would be my choice. In the pic above, notice window trim is different width at the top – to avoid narrow application of the stone?

You’re right, they added a strip of white vinyl. I think the effect looks okay here, but agree that stone product as a backsplash would be very trying. I’ve seen it on fireplace walls and that sort of thing, which seems like a better use.

Your cleaning comment cracks me up because that’s all I can think about when we’re planning to move to the farm. I want everything easy to clean!

When Mike remodeled our kitchen a few years ago he made beautiful white, shaker-style cabinets. Well, the ridge on the bottom holds dirt and the interior corners are impossible to clean without a tiny brush. So lovely, but so demanding! 🙂

Easy maintenance is what I’m all about. Not that many years on this planet left for folks our age so especially important to have time for the simple pleasures. We live in a condo, which isn’t for everyone, but it’s nice to not mow yard, shovel snow, etc. and, instead, use that time for other things, no matter how frivolous.
