Long runs

[today’s run: 4 miles]

We are getting deeper into our marathon training schedule.  That means that our Saturday morning run is starting to get kind of epic.  This week we are supposed to do 17 miles.  Going at our usual rate that will kill a big chunk of 4 hours (with water stops and other goofing around).

Marathon training just takes a lot of time.  A lot of time spent in uncomfortable situations, sweaty, hot, watching for traffic, swatting at flies, trying not to think about the blister or the chafing or whatever thing is messing up the whole experience.

The general plan is to do a couple of longer Saturday runs, then fall back, then do a couple longer… etc.  When we get up into the low ’20s it is one week long, one week short (with short being about 12).

I just heard yesterday a race report from someone who did a 100 mile event.  The longest she had run in practice was 50 miles.  Just those two runs alone would knock out about a week of my life.  I like the concept but not the practical implications.

Our highest weekly mileage will be up around 45.  At 5 mph, that’s 9 hours of running during one week, not counting the extra sleep and other inconveniences.
