Silvertone – cont’d

[Today’s run: Limerock Road – 4 miles]

My wife and I have been working on the Silvertone console radio some more.  We got all of the capacitors changed out.  The next thing to fix was the speaker field coil.

Fortunately, this speaker had some screws to remove to get the thing out.  I tested it for continuity with the ohm meter and it was broken.

What to do!?!

We could replace the speaker with a modern one, or try to fix this old one.  I was able to acquire some magnet wire, and we rigged up a turns counter.  Here is a picture of the coil as we were stripping off the old wire.  Sure enough, we found three different breaks in the wire of the coil, one about 500 turns from the inside end.  Do you know, there were 8300 turns of 32 AWG wire on that thing?

We put the new wire on, all 8300 turns plus a little in case we missed a few.  We turned it with  the battery-powered drill/driver that I received for Christmas.  Worked pretty good.  And we stuffed it back into the speaker.

Tonight we were testing stuff out and determined that the speaker repair works!  I have to say that is pretty amazing.  We had sound coming from the speaker.

And we have a plastic grocery bag full of old 32 AWG wire.
