Settling In

[Yesterday: 3.5 miles]

Last week was busy. I worked each day. But the household changed a lot.

The wife arrived at the house on Tuesday (I’m trying to remember) along with her sister and brother-in-law. This was the last trip down from the old house. They had finished the day overseeing the moving crew. And along with them came the dog, the cat and the 13 ducks. I had the duck enclosure in good enough shape to hold the ducks in, but not as secure from incursion as we wanted.

Wednesday the movers arrived and filled the house with boxes. I slept in my own bed again.

Since Wednesday we have been slowly opening boxes and getting things arranged. That will go on for quite awhile.

Saturday our son helped me a lot. Together we drove back up to the house and picked up a few straggling items. He did almost all the loading, and he swept out the garage. The housekeepers had been in and the interior was looking very nice. The only things left we moved into the shed for later transport. On the way back I drove the old Aerostar minivan while he drove the full-size van, which is now parked at his place with my junk in the back. That gives me a slightly more efficient vehicle for my work commute. I will have to keep things moving toward getting my junk out of his yard and vehicles.

Saturday we also made a big trip to the grocery story in Laurel and stocked up with the usual stuff and replacements for condiments and baubles that usually live in the fridge or on the shelf.

Our Amazon order for some 1/2″ wire cloth came in and I picked that up one morning at the local post office. Saturday and Sunday had me fortifying the duck enclosure. I still need to make a gate. The ducks seem to approve, we’ve been getting 6-7 eggs each day.

Sunday I visited at the local PCA church and enjoyed that a lot. Wife didn’t go because we were on the last scraps of clean clothing. Fortunately, the Lowes delivery truck came through as advertised and dropped off our new washer and dryer and she was able to get some things laundered before the end of the day.

Work has been going well. We have a couple of bugs to work on in the current setup and they are telling me we have a new board to work on which will have a couple of small microcontrollers on it and it’s my job to get them programmed with the needed functions. They keep saying mid-October, but it will be my first time doing this and I’ve been giving them appropriate feedback about expectations. I don’t expect it to be overly difficult, but just not something I can set a timeline on.

My first paycheck came on the 15th and that was nice. I look at all of the effort going into this change and still wonder if it was the right call. But we’re here and I’m off and running. I spoke to the grandkids on the phone a bit today and being more tied up with work goes against my generally lazy nature. It’s hard to know which is the right way sometimes.

Wife is recovering very well from her surgery and that has been a big improvement on her health. She has some lifting restrictions but otherwise is getting things done and again out doing her exercise. She even ran into a neighbor out walking and they both have done ultra-marathon races, so they had a lot to talk about.

So all of the needed moving parts have come together and the needs have been checked off one after another. There is some comfort in seeing that as providential and affirming of our decision.

Sunday I ran with some new shoes on and it was the best run I’ve had in quite awhile.
