New chair

[Today’s run: 3.2 miles]

Today’s run was in the dark, again. And it was 32 degrees. It felt like a return to winter. But the day was sunny and warmed up nicely.

With my “saved” daylight, after dinner in the evening I drove up toward Caledonia, MS and bought a used office chair I had found on Facebook Marketplace. I did the round trip, about an hour, and got home while it was still light.

My old chair had fallen on hard times. I don’t remember what happened to the back. Somehow it is no longer in the picture. I’ve been effectively sitting on a stool for a number of months. So when this newish looking white mesh chair appeared for less than fast food for two, I decided to check it out. And the rest is history.

It seems to hold me up ok.

I have a love/hate relationship with modern office chairs. For my longest office stint, which ended in 2009, I used a wooden kitchen chair which I found by the side of the road near my house, someone’s “take this away” item. That worked for me really well. The other people in the office thought I was nuts. My short stint in-office in Dubuque featured fancy mesh-highbacked models which were comfortable enough but nothing fantastic.

The chair arms are nice in theory but always seem to get in the way. The backs also are minimally effective. I don’t have arms long enough to type without actually being at least upright if not sitting forward.

The elderly lady I bought it from said that her son called it a gaming chair. She said he used it for a little while but decided he didn’t like it.

I’m much more particular about screens and keyboards. Keyboards are first, then screens.

The keyboard on my work laptop is dying. I called the support number and they told me that I was eligible for a replacement going by age alone (I’ve had the same laptop for the nearly 5 years I’ve worked for them.) I use an external keyboard most of the time, so it really hasn’t been a problem. But most of the keys on the right side of the keyboard have to be pushed very deliberately to get an effect. This may have something to do with the right front corner being bent up from that time it fell off the loader tire (about 4′ high) on to pavement. That was at least two years ago. I guess age is just catching up.

They tell me I am in the queue to get a new laptop, but I don’t know when.
