After fooling around with things a bit more, I dropped the pan of the transmission in the short truck. Bad news: this transmission is shot. That silvery stuff is metal pieces and shavings; bearings, gear teeth, who knows what. The round hairy looking thing in the middle is a magnet that is supposed to collect filings, which it has done very well. But I think it was overtaxed in the current situation.
I am not inclined to attempt to rebuild it myself. And a rebuilt one for ~$2,000 seems a bit excessive considering the condition of the rest of the truck.
I put the pan back on, just to keep the parts in one pile for now.
(Somehow this picture reminds me of panning for gold. Lots of shiny stuff, but the wrong color and in the wrong place.)
