Chatty Cathy

What’s in a name?

We are known by our names before we are really known.  When we introduce ourselves, we generally extend our hand look a person in the eye and say, “Hi!  I’m _____.”   The other person generally replies in like manner, shaking your hand and giving their name as well.

Usually, you immediately forget that new person’s name.  You have, however, made an impression on them in one way or another.

Most people, when they hear my name, well, their eyes glaze over because I have a stuffy name.  It makes me easier to forget.

The things about me that do stand out, however, is my height (or lack thereof) and my ability to talk and talk and talk.

Today, I have been out talked.  Hard to believe but true.

We are going to back in time about a month.

Remember I told you have Rover (my hen) had hatched some babies?  All of them except for one died.  This one remaining chick, I believe, is a girl.

She is a talker!

Holy Cow!  I have been around chickens for some time now and I have never heard a chicken carry on as much as this one!

“Peep!  Peep!  Peep!  Peep!”  It is unending and exhausting.  But kinda of fun, too.   🙂

What I have discovered by trail and error is that she likes company.  She is a clingy little thing and likes to be held.  All. Day. Long.

When you hold her, she is quiet.  She is content.

When you put her back in her little cage, she complains vociferously!

So, for most of today, I have walked around with a baby chicken on my shoulder.  That is where she wants to be.

She rides around content.  She pecks at my freckles and earrings.  She thinks she is pretty hot stuff.

Today, I finally decided on her name, too.  I think it is rather fitting and I think it is a name that won’t need to be repeated to people often.  Cathy.  Chatty Cathy.
