No Sugar?

Let’s get down to brass tacks on this conversation. Everybody knows my next birthday I’ll be 60.  A new decade and more importantly, a new Age Group!!!  I’m very excited about both!  My 50’s have been good to me but it’s time to move on.

As athletes it’s fun to be the new kids on the block in the AG (Age Group).  We theoretically have the fresher legs and a little bit more spring in our step.  I’ll admit that any spring in my step went bye bye a while back.  These days it’s fun to cover the miles and successfully cross the finish lines.

So, what’s the big deal?

For a little while my body has been rebelling against what I’ve been eating.  I’m not talking about spicy food kind of stuff, I’m talking about the kind of stuff we use when we fuel for our training and events.  I’m talking about the sweets we enjoy as treats such as a candy bar or ice cream.  Sugars.

I started noticing it initially when running.  I’d complete a run and come home extremely bloated.  I’d have a regular tummy before the run but after the run I’d look 6-8 months pregnant!  It’s be gone the next day but something was off.

Soon it started affecting my day to day life.  If I had a beer, I’d bloat.  If I had candy, I’d bloat.  Salt?  Forget it!!!  I’d blow up like the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man!

My doctor in Iowa City and I sat down and bounced around ideas, etc.  Finally it came down to the fact that my body was no longer digesting simple sugars, primarily fructose.  I have Fructose Malabsorption so we’re doing some dietary changes at our house!

The dietary changes are kind of frustrating because we actually eat pretty clean but we’re working on fine tuning it.  Our weekend at the Iowa State Fair?  We blew the diet out of the water but sometimes we just do things like that, right?

So, what kind of changes are we looking at?  Here’s a sample of things you can and cannot eat for someone with Fructose Malabsorption:  Lots of stuff  you cannot eat!

So, lots of BIG changes at our house!  Neither one of us is looking like we’re missing any meals so we’re definitely finding stuff to eat.  Missing a lot of pizza, that’ll be an occasional treat.  Same with tacos.

I think avocados are okay!  YAY for that, right? #itsthelittlethings

Still grabbing the miles no matter what because,
