Cowboy Mounted Shooting

[Monday run: 2 miles; Tuesday run: 3.4 miles]

We are back from our Iowa vacation and doing our regular stuff here in the regular spot.

Waiting in the mail on our return was our “determination letter” for the WMFH-LP radio station.  That means we are now officially blessed as a “public charity”, meaning that people can give us money and then write it off on their income taxes, just  like the Red Cross or United Way or any of those guys.  I have some work to do now trying to find grants to apply for.

I have some pictures from our visits to the Iowa State Fair.

We went and saw a thing called Cowboy Mounted Shooting.  They had these balloons set up, 5 white ones and 5 red ones.  The contestants would ride their horse around the course and shoot the balloons in the correct order with their pistols.  There were more than six balloons so each person had two pistols and had to switch in the middle.  The idea was to make it around the course as fast as possible with time penalties for missing a balloon or knocking one over with the horse.  It was fun to watch.

In this picture the woman contestant has a red skirt.  She has just shot the first two white balloons and is heading toward the third.  Then she has to go around the barrel and come back toward the last two white ones.

Here is a youtube video about this sport  —  http://youtu.be/iihCQlPFIMk

I was kind of hoping someone would use both hands to shoot and put the reigns in their teeth (like in True Grit), but nobody did that.
