Two last names

[Today’s run:  3 miles]

My email address at my employer displays as “Howard, Chris” and I frequently get sales emails from people who don’t know me that start:  “Dear Howard, …”

Today I joined a conference call and it cut off my name and just announced me as “.. Howard” and the guy leading the call made reference to people with two first names.

My almost-full name is Christopher Howard and to me that is not two first names but two last names.

The people in the house next door when I grew up were Charlie and Doris Christopher.  I just checked the online property records and the neighbor’s house was built before I was born.  Hmm.

I don’t know if that is a coincidence or not.  It could be that I’m named after the neighbors, or Christopher Columbus, or who knows.  Maybe they moved in later.   Maybe they were shopping for houses and discovered this nice place near a young family with a little boy named Christopher and decided it was a sign from Fate to buy that house.  I don’t know.  I’m willing to live with the ambiguity.

Now, it would have been really interesting if the neighbor was Howard Christopher.  But no.  Probably for the best anyway, to keep the mailman sane if nothing else.

A correction: Norma was the mom next door and Doris was their youngest daughter. They also had a daughter named Jane who ended up marrying a man (I think his name was Jimmy) from back in Massachusetts and moving there. I think they also had a married son who came to Iowa once or twice.

It sounds right to me. I had trouble remembering anything but “Mr. Christopher” until you wrote that.
