End of an era

[today’s run: 7 miles]

I went over to the running group in Starkville today.  I started going there 7 years ago, shortly after we moved to Mississippi.  The group has been meeting at the White’s house for all of that time, save for a couple of days a year when they are on vacation.  In fact, the group has been meeting at the White’s house on Saturday mornings for something like 20 years.

But the Whites announced earlier this year that they were going to stop hosting the weekly run after December 17th of this year, two more weeks.  I’m going to be unable to attend for the next two weeks so today was my last day.

There have been various conversations about where the group will be meeting after the 17th.  I think the general consensus is that people should keep an eye on the web page for  updates.

Edit: changed 8 to 7

I’m not sure if there is going to be a party of some kind. The organization doesn’t really have any organization, if you know what I mean.

Yesterday it was Mr. White’s birthday. I remember one other occasion in my 8 years when his birthday fell on a Saturday and I had heard he didn’t want it acknowledged. So, yesterday I took it upon myself to break the rules of hospitality and make him suffer: we sang Happy Birthday. He looked mildly mortified 🙂 But he’s a pretty resilient guy, so I figured he could recover.

But I’m not going to always be there to lead in the mayhem!
