A Remarkable Woman

[today’s run: nothing yet]

I have to confess that I didn’t accomplish a lot at my job yesterday.  I was captivated by the unfolding story of a small-town government official in Kentucky.

This woman apparently thinks that it was the will of God and of the people of her county that she be their County Clerk.  I can go for that.

And she apparently thinks that it is the will of God and of the people of Kentucky that marriage be between one man and one woman.  So far so good.

But then, word comes from some lofty place that she must do something differently, breaking her vows to the will of God and the people of Kentucky.  And she has the nerve to stick to her principles even to the point of going to jail.

That’s amazing.

Her vow to Kentucky, as I read it, was to uphold the law.

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this Commonwealth, and be faithful and true to the Commonwealth of Kentucky so long as I continue a citizen thereof, and that I will faithfully execute, to the best of my ability, the office of ——————— according to law; and I do further solemnly swear (or affirm) that since the adoption of the present Constitution, I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God.”

That seems to apply to her but not to anyone much above her level of operation, particularly not those lofted souls who decided that marriage no longer means what it meant for the first 200 years of our republic.

And don’t get me started on your beloved Californian civil servants who conspired to doom a duly passed referendum because they found it unhandy, and the gay judge who waved aside every argument so that he could justify his own predilections.

On this topic the pro-gay side has used every method by hook and by crook. And now they stand outside a jail cell shouting “Love Wins” while a women is kept from going home to her family. They wouldn’t know Love it if smacked them in the face. Don’t talk to me about the law, it wasn’t so much as a speed-bump in our journey to where we are.

A lot of things have changed in 200 years. Things that were common (the standard?) for centuries.

No slaves. Women can now vote. Blacks must be served in matters of commerce with equal access to whites. Blacks can now marry whites.

She can go home any time she wants. All she has to do is say that her $80k/year job is not for her.
