I did some more research on our clutch problem with the Toyota truck. It appears that the most likely culprit is the hydraulic master-cylinder, connected to the clutch pedal.
The amount of pressure in the hydraulic line causes the slave cylinder mounted down at the transmission to actuate the clutch against a heavy spring. Our problem is, if the clutch pedal is held down, the initial strong actuation gets weaker and the clutch starts to engage. So it is most probably a leak in the system inside the master cylinder.
I’ve ordered replacements for both the master cylinder and the slave.

Your car repair tales remind me of Car Talk. It’s fun to figure out what needs fixing but a hassle, too. it can be empowering when you do it yourself.
I wouldn’t be much good without internet groups of various kinds. Toyota trucks have more than one good internet site. One I find useful: tacomaworld.com.
For this particularly problem I was afraid it was going to be something internal to the transmission and I am not able to do that.
I replaced both the master and the slave cylinder for the clutch hydraulic system. We put in fluid and bled out the bubbles. It seems to be working just great now.
