More on NCX-5

[Today’s run: Limerock Road – 4+ miles]

We had a good strong run this morning.  And I can feel it this afternoon. It’s just after 5 and I’m thinking I would like a hot bath then go to bed.

Anyway,  Since I’m thinking about getting rid of this NCX-5 transceiver I decided to fix it up a bit.  I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense but my mind works that way.

I had done a couple of modifications to it long ago.  One was to add a three-legged voltage regulator to the VFO circuit instead of a zener diode.  I don’t know why I was thinking that a 12-volt regulator would be a good replacement for a 6 volt zener.  It did work.  But I have now taken that mod out.

I had replaced the filter capacitors in the separate power supply at the very beginning.  And I had replaced a couple of on-board electrolytics in the early days of my acquisition.  But they were hanging down below the chassis and the wiring was a mess.  So this morning I fired up the big soldering iron and got the failed multi-section twist-lock cap off out of there.  I hope to restuff it with some working caps and get it put back on.

I may have to do some VFO alignment after all of that.  Then we will see if it is worth keeping or if I’ll take it to the hamfest in January.
