I pulled one of the old reel-to-reel tape players out of my recently acquired pile of tube-era audio gear and I have been playing some of the tapes that came in the big tub-of-tapes. Most of them appear to be what you’d call mix tapes of swing-band kinds of music, a variety of styles and instrument groups.
There are also some commercially recorded music tapes and a few with voices on them which I’ve had problems playing. I think those are recorded at a different speed.
All of this stuff is from the late 50’s and early 60’s. The tapes are sometimes brittle and a bit moldy.
It looks like we are going to start on another car project. I’m supposed to pick up a trailer at the rental place tomorrow, then over the weekend I will drive to Birmingham and pick up an MG Midget. This one appears to be in better shape than the MGB we were dealing with in Iowa. But we shall see. I made a low offer and the guy said come and get it.
