I took last Friday and this Tuesday off and we made a 5 day Memorial Day weekend which we spent in Loveland, Colorado visiting with our new grandson. We had lots of fun.
Travel went smoothly. We were on Southwest from Des Moines to Denver and back. The flights were pretty full. We had to wear masks in the airports and on the planes but otherwise at both ends the general mask mandate is gone for those who are vaccinated (which we are).
During the trip I read a biography of R.C. Sproul which just came out. I haven’t quite finished it. But I’ve found it very interesting. There is a little bit of repetition among the chapters. I’ve enjoyed his Renewing Your Mind program over the years. He and Alistair Begg are both favorite preachers.
It so often happens that these popular teachers/preachers get into some kind of trouble, dragged into some mess or refuse to relinquish their spot when age eclipses them. I think of the revelations about Ravi Zacharias and his sexual abuse of massage therapists. I worry that people get too excited about one man or another.
In my recent meditations about the book of Jonah I was pondering the role of God as the “appointer”. He appointed Jonah to preach to Ninevah. But he also appointed a fish, and then a worm! I don’t think I’ve ever heard a sermon on the text (Jonah 4:7): “And God appointed a worm”.
