We had a good week. On Monday we had the family gift exchange. We also ate pizza, and my sister-in-law brought probably the most delicious apple pie I have ever tasted. I went away completely stuffed to the top.
Later in the week I made some frosted sugar cookies. I only ate three, honest. The rest we gave away to the neighbors.
Today we had a beautiful weather day, warm and sunny for the first time in a long while. The tower crew got together and we finished taking down the last 40 feet of that tower up north of Aberdeen.
There are generally two ways to mount the first section of a tower. One is to use a big block of concrete and a “pier pin”. The most common way is to use a big block of concrete and stick the first section of tower in the concrete. This tower up in Aberdeen was made that way. One downside of that construction is that it is easy to get water backed up in the tower legs and that can lead to freeze splitting and potential rust issues.
This tower had some obvious freeze damage on one of the legs, but the legs seemed solid. We used a power hacksaw to cut the legs down low near the concrete and plenty of water came out. But the steel is shiny and the galvanizing looks OK inside. I wouldn’t use the cut-off section for anything other then maybe burying it in concrete again to make the start of another installation.
