Linux is a freely available Unix-like operating system for the Intel x86 architecture. It has also been ported to Sparc and Alpha platforms.

By adding the GNU compilers and utilities and the XFree86 port of the X Window system, you can build a powerful system for very little money.

The "distribution" that we use most often is from Red Hat.
