Mr Drake

[today: rest day]

In 7th grade I went to Wilson Junior High in Des Moines.  It was on University street, where the corporate HQ for AE Dairy is now.  It was an old building then. My father and maternal grandfather had also attended there I believe.

The english teacher was this old skinny guy.  At least he seemed old to me then.

I was thinking about him today.  On facebook people have been posting things related to the WW2 holocaust and the concentration camps.  I think it was the last day of school, he passed around some very graphic pictures, snapshots of piles of bodies.  He told us about “liberating” a concentration camp.  He said that even then there were some people trying to say it never happened.

After 7th grade I started at a different school and never saw Mr. Drake again.

One reply on “Mr Drake”

I loved Mr Drake. He introduced us to so many classical works. He did seem cadaverous, though. Never thought about why, as a 7th grader. Was he chronically ill, did he have an aversion to food…kind of wish I knew more about him. I recall he was also very good with the kids who didn’t take to English and reading very well. He’d encourage us all to remember how to spell things by thinking of them phonetically (ie – fat I goo eee for fatigue). Thanks for this fond memory!
