Collins 75A-1 Receiver

[today’s run: 3 slow miles]

A few years ago I was at the ham fest swap meet in Jackson Mississippi, sitting at a table selling some of my surplus radio and electronics stuff.

It was winding down toward the end of the event. The guy at a nearby table was trying to unload some Collins receivers for an estate over in Alabama.

I’ve always been interested in old Collins receivers. The closest thing I have owned was a military R390 made by Collins.

Anyway, he had 2 receivers left and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse so I bought the pair.

Recently I printed off the manual and schematic for the older one, a 75A1. I took it out of it’s box (which is actually a transmitter box) and put it up on the bench. I can see that someone has replaced some of the bathtub capacitors in the past. But there are still some old paper electrolytics in there. And there is one tube missing.

So yet another project to work on when I feel like it!

Here’s a webpage about a guy restoring one.
