We received an email for the RD yesterday stating this was the 2nd hottest race they&#8217;ve ever had. YAY?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6232\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6232\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6232\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tenor-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"136\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re going to have to do a little backtracking here and discuss things that happened way back in March.\u00a0 The reason we&#8217;re going all the way back to March is to bring you up to date to my doctor&#8217;s visit yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6225\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6225\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/EhapEAJXcAMXYlx.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/EhapEAJXcAMXYlx.jpg 900w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/EhapEAJXcAMXYlx-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/EhapEAJXcAMXYlx-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/EhapEAJXcAMXYlx-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When MFH and I returned home from my 100 Mile race back in March, we started feeling off?\u00a0 I lost my sense of taste\/smell.\u00a0 MFH was just totally wiped out.\u00a0 Bear in mind, this was before they discovered that the sense of taste\/smell was part of COVID symptoms.\u00a0 Everything we were feeling was easily explained from traveling and me having run 100 miles in 31 hours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6226\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6226\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6226\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/90619551_1071708939860273_7697272171202084864_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/90619551_1071708939860273_7697272171202084864_n.jpg 720w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/90619551_1071708939860273_7697272171202084864_n-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/90619551_1071708939860273_7697272171202084864_n-624x832.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A little while later, learning about the new COVID symptoms, we were suspicious that maybe we had caught COVID?\u00a0 We decided that we really didn&#8217;t feel THAT bad and it was probably just travel\/race related and kind of forgot about it.<\/p>\n<p>During our trip to Mississippi this past July, we visited my parents on a Tuesday. Two days later on Thursday, my dad had a mandatory COVID test for an upcoming colonoscopy (lucky guy, right?) and it came back positive! He had ZERO symptoms so he was super surprised.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6227\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6227\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6227\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, he called us right away because he wanted us to know that, Oops! I kinda infected y&#8217;all!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6233\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6233\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6233\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tenor-2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These things happen.<\/p>\n<p>This time, MFH and I got very sick.\u00a0 I mean, we felt awful!!! Because we knew my dad had tested positive, we went and got tested.\u00a0 We both got negative results. We figured we&#8217;d just caught a bug somewhere?<\/p>\n<p>Back to the doctor&#8217;s appointment yesterday.\u00a0 I asked if maybe the past two summer races where I had heat related problems could be COVID related?\u00a0 He said we probably really did have it back in March and then again after visiting my parents.\u00a0 The reason for the negative test result was due to having enough antibodies in our system to cause a negative result.\u00a0 Now, I don&#8217;t know beans about this stuff but that&#8217;s what he said so I&#8217;m sharing it with you.<\/p>\n<p>Many of you know that with our move up northeast to Iowa, we moved into a house without AC.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t think it would be that big of a deal because the heat\/humidity in Iowa doesn&#8217;t compare to the heat\/humidity of Mississippi.\u00a0 What we didn&#8217;t count on was this summer being a very toasty summer for NE Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>My training this past summer has been very challenging.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen my pace tank.\u00a0 The runs have been very, very hard.\u00a0 Zero energy.\u00a0 Poor sleep.\u00a0 Rapidly climbing RHR, showing I&#8217;m not recovering well from my training.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing this with my doc, he said that the lack of AC was a huge contributor to the past 2 races.\u00a0 Not being able to cool down after the B2B long runs&#8230;my body has just been a little furnace all summer and the internal temp has been climbing.\u00a0 When I had those past 2 ultras, trying to increase the intensity of the runs has made my body simply shut down.<\/p>\n<p>This past Saturday it literally shut off the lights!<\/p>\n<p>The first hour or so of Saturday was such fun running.\u00a0 It was still cool.\u00a0 There was a little bit of shade.\u00a0 It was wonderful!!!<\/p>\n<p>Then the furnace started and the shade disappeared for the rest of the day.\u00a0 Gotta love summer running, right? Still, this course was so pretty, who cared if it was getting a little warm!\u00a0 I saw people playing polo, a few slithery running buddies, one deceased raccoon (RIP) and a discarded pregnancy test.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6228\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6228\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6228\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/118665284_3253744334745680_143699476926752931_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"888\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/118665284_3253744334745680_143699476926752931_n.jpg 888w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/118665284_3253744334745680_143699476926752931_n-300x189.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/118665284_3253744334745680_143699476926752931_n-768x484.jpg 768w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/118665284_3253744334745680_143699476926752931_n-624x394.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 888px) 100vw, 888px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thinking of all the possible scenarios of that pregnancy test kept my mind occupied and entertained for many miles!<\/p>\n<p>MFH (My Favorite Husband) drove passed me on the way to the mile 10 aid station.\u00a0 He hollered out the window, Hey sexy!\u00a0 You&#8217;re running strong!\u00a0 I was excited to see him at mile 10.\u00a0 He had my Tailwind Nutrition on ice, cold mineral water for a drink and a quick kiss for the road.\u00a0 It was great!<\/p>\n<p>We reloaded my hydration vest for everything I&#8217;d need before meeting him again at mile 21.\u00a0 I had gloriously cold Tailwind and an ice pack for the back of my hydration vest and then I took off!<\/p>\n<p>All along this run I kept a careful check as to how I was fueling\/hydrating.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want a repeat of the excessive sweating like in my last ultra a month earlier.\u00a0 There was no way I wanted to risk overheating\/dehydrating. Everything was going textbook perfect!<\/p>\n<p>Mile 16 I suddenly felt a little dizzy.\u00a0 I thought, that&#8217;s odd and immediately did another check of my Tailwind consumption.\u00a0 Nope, everything was spot on!\u00a0 Weird. The dizziness passed as quickly as it came.\u00a0 A little further down the road was an aid station.\u00a0 It was just a few coolers of water but I used one of my portable cups and grabbed a quick drink of water for just in case that dizziness meant dehydration.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty soon I met up with a guy.\u00a0 He looked like he was struggling a little bit?\u00a0 Little did I know he would play a very important part in keeping me safe in a few miles!<\/p>\n<p>I fell into step with him for about a mile.\u00a0 We chatted.\u00a0 Nice guy!\u00a0 I wished him well and took off again.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, the route took me onto almost a mile of concrete.\u00a0 This was a surprisingly busy stretch of road!\u00a0 The concrete reflected the heat up onto my face.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t a fan of the concrete at all!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6229\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6229\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6229\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tenor.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The coolest thing of that stretch of concrete was two deer zipping across the road right in front of me!\u00a0 I mean, how awesome is that!?!<\/p>\n<p>Checking my directions, I saw a left hand turn in about a half mile.\u00a0 Looking ahead was a big hill.\u00a0Ugh but what you going to do?\u00a0 You steel yourself for the hill, turn off the concrete and start grinding up the hill!<\/p>\n<p>The very last thing I remember is when I turned off the concrete and the heat off the white gravel felt like it literally slammed against me.\u00a0 I was all, Woah!\u00a0 That&#8217;s very toasty!!!\u00a0 Let&#8217;s get away from this!<\/p>\n<p>The next thing I knew, two people were folding me into a car.<\/p>\n<p>So, this part is weird because what I&#8217;m sharing is second hand.\u00a0 It&#8217;s what been told to me by the guy who protected me from traffic and the aid station person who got to us before MFH.<\/p>\n<p>Remember the guy I had chatted with a few miles back?\u00a0 I guess I was at the most a half mile ahead of him?\u00a0 The race route, you could see ahead of you a LONG way.\u00a0 He said he saw me start staggering and then just&#8230;Plop!\u00a0 He hustled up to me asking me if I was okay?\u00a0 I was unconscious.\u00a0 Not okay.<\/p>\n<p>Thank goodness for my RoadID bracelet I wear when running!\u00a0 It has MFH&#8217;s cell on it.\u00a0 He called MFH and explained the situation.\u00a0 Then he pulled me out of the middle of the road so I wouldn&#8217;t get hit by oncoming traffic.<\/p>\n<p>MFH was at the aid station a few miles off and knew exactly where we were then the guy explained.\u00a0 MFH hopped in the car to hustle to where we were but before MFH arrived, an aid station volunteer happened on us.\u00a0 I guess she was driving some supplies to the aid station.\u00a0 It was her car they were trying to stuff me into.<\/p>\n<p>About this time, MFH pulled up.\u00a0 My Guardian Angle\/Knight in Shining Armor hopped into our car with MFH and the two cars drove to the aid station.<\/p>\n<p>I started coming around during the drive and said, Let me out!\u00a0 I can finish this!!!\u00a0 I very seriously didn&#8217;t want a DNF.<\/p>\n<p>She told me, Sweetheart, that man cradled you in his lap and protected you from traffic until help could arrive.\u00a0 Your race is done.<\/p>\n<p>Quite frankly, I was too out of it to argue but I was still a sad panda!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6230\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6230\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6230\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/giphy-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was a sad panda because of the DNF but I was a bigger Sad Panda because that very nice man had sacrificed his race to help me and also got a DNF.<\/p>\n<p>I was also very grateful for him stopping to help!<\/p>\n<p>Together, MFH, my new running friend and I drive to the S\/F to turn in our timing chips and we drove him to his parked car.\u00a0 Before he left, I asked if we could take a selfie.\u00a0 He very graciously said yes.
