There&#8217;s a little bit of history to this Conservancy and didn&#8217;t realize it until MFH (My Favorite Husband) and I arrived.<\/p>\n<p>We spent the Saturday night before the race at the Garst Homestead.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nice, old Iowa farmhouse dating from to the early 1900&#8217;s.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6172\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6172\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6172\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-08-at-6.27.38-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"647\" height=\"486\" Images<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Roswell Garst was a leader in the development of hydrid corn and was responsible in the development of how farming is done today.\u00a0 He encouraged farmers to develop their current farms into\u00a0agribusinesses.\u00a0 He also was instrumental in the use of nitrogen and other chemical fertilizers to help the fields recover faster so the farmer could get more yield per field.<\/p>\n<p>The homestead where MFH and I spent the night was also the place where Nikita Khrushchev visited Mr. Garst in September 1959.\u00a0 There was quite a bit Russian trinkets around the dining room, I&#8217;m guessing they were from that visit.<\/p>\n<p>It was a fascinating little place to spend the night!<\/p>\n<p>I loved it from the start because there were sheep up close to the house.\u00a0 I tried to make friends with the sheep and quickly learned they&#8217;re not as friendly as cows.<a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6173\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6173\"><img recovered from the fact that we were actually staying at a pretty cool place, I laid out my Flat Melinda and went to sleep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6174\" have a race that didn&#8217;t begin until 7:00am and I was doing the happy dance about not having to get up at dark o&#8217;clock to get ready for the race.\u00a0 Still, 5:00 comes early enough and soon it was time to hit the trails.<\/p>\n<p>Now, most of you know that MFH and I have been having a regular Saturday morning #DateRun on the trails at the Mines of Spain.\u00a0 Those trails are so much fun and a bit of a challenge but definitely runable.\u00a0 I thought they&#8217;d be great practice for this race.\u00a0 I&#8217;d heard the trails at Whiterock were tough so I was nervous but tried hard to get as much trail time on my legs as possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6175\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6175\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone always beautiful AND you always leave completely spent.\u00a0 It&#8217;s great!!!<\/p>\n<p>Race day dawned and I was praying the hours MFH and I had spent at the Mines would help, even just a little bit!<\/p>\n<p>*Parenthetical insertion here regarding the COVID-19 stuff and this\u00a0 race:\u00a0 This was a small race and the only time we would be around others was at the main aid station and the S\/F.\u00a0 The runner crews (people like MFH there to help me when I came through loops) were all VERY social distanced. The aid station people all wore masks\/gloves.\u00a0 Part of our race swag was a specially designed buff (which is probably the nicest buff I&#8217;ve ever owned) and we were required to wear it at the start and when we approached the S\/F aid station.\u00a0 There were signs up that at what point you had to pull up your buff.\u00a0 There were lots of hand sanitizers&#8230;all that kind of thing.\u00a0 I think they did an excellent job working with state\/national regulations.\u00a0 We had were staggered starts which weren&#8217;t amazingly social distanced?\u00a0 We all just had our buffs up so it really wasn&#8217;t a problem.<\/p>\n<p>I was in the 7:05 start.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6178\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6178\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6178\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108843354_722730691606973_7032588388034221236_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108843354_722730691606973_7032588388034221236_n.jpg 828w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108843354_722730691606973_7032588388034221236_n-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108843354_722730691606973_7032588388034221236_n-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108843354_722730691606973_7032588388034221236_n-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0You can see how there&#8217;s white dividing lines between the starting groups.\u00a0 People in the later start groups aren&#8217;t even lined up yet. As the group in front of you began you would move up, just like in corrals in a marathon.\u00a0 Finally, it was time for the 7:05&#8217;s to go!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6177\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6177\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6177\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/107852856_3123558787723293_8979530604142934313_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/107852856_3123558787723293_8979530604142934313_n.jpg 595w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/107852856_3123558787723293_8979530604142934313_n-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a cooler morning.\u00a0 Low 60&#8217;s at the start with kinda high humidity but nothing like Mississippi humidity so I was a happy runner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6179\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6179\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6179\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/109159947_2632249137048328_6637035577441599282_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/109159947_2632249137048328_6637035577441599282_o.jpg 960w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/109159947_2632249137048328_6637035577441599282_o-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/109159947_2632249137048328_6637035577441599282_o-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/109159947_2632249137048328_6637035577441599282_o-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Y&#8217;all, I was soooo excited to run these trails!\u00a0 They were fun and they were easy (compared to the Mines of Spain, that is).\u00a0 I was having a blast!!!<\/p>\n<p>There are 3 loops to the Whiterock Ultra:\u00a0 The red loop, white loop and the blue loop.<\/p>\n<p>That first loop, the red loop was 7.6 miles and was the strongest trail miles I&#8217;ve run in a long time.\u00a0 I was thrilled!<\/p>\n<p>The second loop, the white loop, is when things went a little wonky.\u00a0 The second loop was a figure 8.\u00a0 You ran one side, 5 miles, crossed the road and ran 6.6 miles to finish the loop.<\/p>\n<p>Due to some unfortunate trail markings and me not reading them well, I ended up running the first side of the white loop twice.\u00a0 My 5 miles turned into 10.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not awful in the grand scheme of things except I ran out of Tailwind.<\/p>\n<p>My nice cool morning was long gone and it was around 85F so running out of Tailwind was less than an ideal thing to happen?\u00a0 I was not feeling spiffy.\u00a0 My cap that had been dripping, was now dry.\u00a0 I was not sweating and was feeling disoriented.\u00a0 Still, I was thrilled to come off the first half of the white loop and see my In-Laws!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=6180\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6180\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6180\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108868967_3094587973994651_845533886644318710_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108868967_3094587973994651_845533886644318710_n.jpg 960w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108868967_3094587973994651_845533886644318710_n-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108868967_3094587973994651_845533886644318710_n-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/108868967_3094587973994651_845533886644318710_n-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My In-Laws are the absolute best!\u00a0 They had never been to any race before, road or ultra and decided they would like to see what ultra running was all about.\u00a0 Y&#8217;all, they skipped Sunday morning church to come see me run!!!\u00a0 It was so awesome to see them!<\/p>\n<p>If you look at the elevation profile from my COROS download, you&#8217;ll see two sections that are identical?\u00a0 That&#8217;s the part of where I got lost and ran the section twice.
