When MFH (My Favorite Husband) and I moved to Iowa from Mississippi last July, I was so afraid of the pending winter.\u00a0 I tried not to show it but I was completely terrified!\u00a0 I’d never run in snow.\u00a0 I didn’t own a jacket for chilly temps, didn’t even know what kind of jacket to purchase!\u00a0 I didn’t own any toasty warm mittens and was at a complete loss as to what to do.\u00a0 I knew winter would come quickly (didn’t expect to be running in 6-8″ of snow in October!) and I needed to get my ducks in a row.<\/p>\n

MFH had purchased a Treadmill (TM) but it and my knees really weren’t on speaking terms.\u00a0 With my November 50M and pending March 100M, the TM really wasn’t an amazing training option anyway.\u00a0 Outside running is what I love regardless of the weather so I knew I needed to learn to run in the chilly Iowa temps and learn to deal with things like snow\/ice and being uncomfortably chilly.\u00a0 *Below zero temps\/wind chill is challenging running!<\/p>\n

When we were preparing to move, she mentioned she lived where we were moving.\u00a0 I was, No Way!!!\u00a0 #SmallWorld<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Even though we lived in the same town, we really hadn’t had an opportunity to run together.\u00a0 She’s an amazing runner and waayy out of my league in talent!\u00a0 She’s also one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.<\/p>\n

As winter was approaching, she told me about this winter trail series over in Dixon, Illinois.\u00a0 She encouraged me to give it a try!\u00a0 After some online peer pressure with my coach and getting the thumbs up from him, I registered AND we agreed to carpool to the 4 races together.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The first race of the series was in December.\u00a0 We had one race a month for 4 months.\u00a0 You had to complete all 4 races to earn your finishers shirt.\u00a0 I was determined to earn that shirt.\u00a0 I was determined to learn to run in snow\/ice on trails!!!\u00a0 Seeing as I knew this was something I HAD to learn to do, registering for the series was just the ticket to make me stick with it to reach this particular goal.<\/p>\n

The December race was a 5k.\u00a0 January, a 10k.\u00a0 February a 15k and finally, March a 20k.<\/p>\n

Each race was surprisingly difficult but each race presented different challenges from the previous month.\u00a0 No two races were remotely similar.\u00a0 They were tough and they were fun!<\/p>\n

That first race was short and sweet.\u00a0 A straightforward 5k with 300′ elevation gain…all in the last mile.\u00a0 Wowzers!\u00a0 Talk about a completely vertical mile.\u00a0 It was brutal and you felt amazing when you reached the top!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The 10k had a little bit of snow and this was the first time I’d ever added spikes to my Topo Athletic trail shoes.\u00a0 I’d never needed spikes on my shoes before and this was an interesting experience!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The night before the race, MFH and I went to a local running store for the spikes.\u00a0 I pretty much knew what I wanted?\u00a0 I wanted screws for my shoes but all they had were YakTrax.\u00a0 \u00a0They carried the YakTrax coils and spikes.\u00a0 I knew from many online runners the coils broke easily so I purchased the spikes.\u00a0 I have to admit I was kind of grumpy about the YakTrax, primarily because they weren’t what I wanted to buy.\u00a0 Then again, I had procrastinated so I didn’t have anybody to blame but myself.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I will admit the YakTrax were a lifesaver on that 10k!\u00a0 The trails that day were mostly greasy mud with snow and a little ice.\u00a0 It was a lot of rolling hills with bunches of bends so you couldn’t see well in front of you.\u00a0 The little bit of added traction was most welcome.\u00a0 *side note:\u00a0 I completely destroyed those YakTrax in 4 runs.\u00a0 I eventually purchased some Ice Spikes and have been running, happily in them the rest of the winter*<\/p>\n

February found us running the 15k in 5-ish” of packed snow on top of ice.\u00a0 YAY for the Ice Spikes for this run!!!<\/p>\n

The 15k wasn’t especially hilly but was rather flat.\u00a0 The flatness made it deceptively difficult.\u00a0 The place where it got rough was the mile or so through a harvested soy bean field.\u00a0 That was just brutal!!!\u00a0 Who knew that soy bean stubble was such a rough surface on which to run!?!\u00a0 \u00a0Maybe it’s that misery loves company thing or something but I was having the time of my life!<\/p>\n

Last Saturday, March 7,\u00a0 it was time to wrap up the series and earn the blue shirt!\u00a0 I was so excited!!!\u00a0 I was also praying for no snow this time.\u00a0 Call me a wimp but that snow running is surprisingly difficult!!!\u00a0 Throughout this winter of racing and training I’ve gained a new respect for my friends who’ve trained in this stuff winter after winter.\u00a0 I had no idea it was this challenging!<\/p>\n

Christi and I drove over to Dixon last Saturday all ready to run the final 20k of the series.\u00a0 I had absolutely no idea what to expect.\u00a0 Every race had been so different from the race before….well, our pre-race email had mentioned a bit of bushwhacking and we might be needing treking poles because the course was going to be technical~other than that, I had no idea what to expect.<\/p>\n

What it ended up being was the most difficult trail race I’ve ever run.\u00a0 It was harder than BFC (Barkley Fall Classic)!\u00a0 Barkley has switchbacks for its hills?\u00a0 This race did not.\u00a0 A large majority of the race was off trail.\u00a0 You simply followed the markings through the woods.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It was muddy, hilly, slippery, hilly, muddy…did I mention hilly?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It. Was. A. Blast!!!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It. Was. Hard!!!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I absolutely loved it and\u00a0 that was the prettiest finish line I’ve seen in my entire life!!!<\/p>\n

I earned the shirt!!!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This series taught me so much!\u00a0 I learned I can do hard things.\u00a0 I learned about the generosity of my fellow runners who shared with me tips for running in new to me weather conditions.\u00a0 This took me way outside my comfort zone!\u00a0 There’s a lot of satisfaction to being able to say I stuck with it because,<\/p>\n
