And Other Mowing Musings

I mowed today. Pretty soon I will have to mow twice a week but this week I was able to procrastinate and only do it once.

As I was mowing I was thinking about the weather forecast. The NWS (National Weather Service) has been advertising some ugly weather beginning tomorrow evening. You know, flooding, tornadoes, large hail, the whole lot. I was happy to have the extra time today to get that mowing done!

Thinking about the weather, I am afraid that I let my mind wander a bit and I was not paying as close attention to my straight lines in the yard. Horrors! I messed up a pass in the yard~it was crooked! This would not do!

I saw a way to remedy the situation. If I could make a pass really, really close to our wild plum trees, I would straighten out my boo-boo. That is what I tried to do. In my enthusiasm for fixing my mess, I was not looking out for the next obstacle. Yup. I drove right through a spider web!

Argh! I hate driving through spider webs!!! I was flailing my arms, trying to get rid of the web. Hoping against hope that the spider was NOT attached to the web! MFH (My Favorite Husband) and my son were gone fishing so I could not run into the house and have MFH check for spiders. Crossing my fingers, I decided to keep on mowing.

I FINALLY got my lines in the yard straightened out, by the way, and continued on.

My next unexpected encounter was with those nasty, black and yellow bumble bees. Those things to not like mowers! The ones we have here are very, very grouchy! They come after you like no-body’s business! They were not there last week, so they must have just moved in. I will have to look into where their nest is and encourage them to move on. This was all on the West side of the yard.

The East side of the yard is less complicated. There are no plum tress, or the ham radio antenna and guy wires to mow around. For a little while, you can just mow back and forth and back and forth without any obstacles. That is, until you reach the apiary (honey bees).

I got stung pretty good on my face last year mowing too close the the bees. I learned my lesson and respect their “space.” I give them a lot of room. After I have done the rest of the mowing, I go back into the house and change into my “bee suit” and finish the rest of the mowing around the bees.

The chickens are also on the East side of the property. They are opportunists. The chickens love mowing day! Mowing means new bugs! I mow in circles around the chickens for a few passes. This scares the bugs into running into the chicken area and the chickens are there to eat them! It is fun to watch. Silly chickens.

I did not mow as close to the Crepe Myrtles as I did last week. I do not like those things! They are difficult to mow around and we have eight of them~four on the East side and four on the West. Last week when I mowed I found a tick on my hair from those things. I do not like them. I would cut them down in a heart beat if I could talk MFH into it. He likes them and they are pretty when they are in bloom. Other than that, they have no endearing qualities.

That is it! I got the mowing done. If we get all the rain that the NWS is advertising, I may not be able to mow again until next weekend! We (MFH and I) will move the chickens up close to the house on the East side the try to protect them from the weather we are supposed to get and other than cleaning out my bedroom closest (aka: tornado shelter) I think I am ready!

Whew!

I mowed today. Pretty soon I will have to mow twice a week but this week I was able to procrastinate and only do it once.
