{"id":2305,"date":"2014-03-18T19:51:35","date_gmt":"2014-03-19T00:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?p=2305"},"modified":"2014-03-18T19:51:35","modified_gmt":"2014-03-19T00:51:35","slug":"those-chickens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?p=2305","title":{"rendered":"Those Chickens!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The past two weeks, MFH and I have been gradually introducing the baby chickens to the grown up chickens. \u00a0My goodness, what an ordeal!<\/p>\n<p>The grown up chickens are not impressed by the young interlopers. \u00a0The grown up chickens are being down right mean and the baby chickens are being, well&#8230;chickens.<\/p>\n<p>The baby chickens are afraid to breathe around the grown up chickens. \u00a0The grown up chickens are keeping the baby chickens away from the food and water. \u00a0They are just being terrible!<\/p>\n<p>The baby chickens are finally getting so that they are able to eat without fear of instant death from the grown up chickens.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the past two-three days, we have been able to leave the chickens alone without constantly peeking through the curtains, so to speak, to make sure that all was well. \u00a0The baby chickens were still coming in at the end of the day to sleep in our back room.<\/p>\n<p>We decided that tonight was the night. \u00a0Tonight the baby chickens were going to sleep outdoors with the grown up chickens.<\/p>\n<p>The grown up chickens have a ritual at &#8220;Bedtime for Birdies.&#8221; \u00a0They get a chicken treat of dried meal worms. \u00a0I put it on the ground and close their door. \u00a0They greedily eat those worms and then trudge up the ladder to the roosting area. \u00a0So&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Tonight while the grown up chickens were enjoying their dried meal worms, MFH and I opened the door to the roosting are and promptly plopped the baby chickens on a roosting bar. \u00a0The baby chickens were stunned. \u00a0They did not know what to think. \u00a0We shut the door and came back into the house.<\/p>\n<p>I watched through a window.<\/p>\n<p>Two grown up chickens went up the ladder and then I heard this awful screeching! \u00a0Next I saw a chicken leg dangling through the opening of the ladder and the roosting area.<\/p>\n<p>*sigh<\/p>\n<p>Out MFH and I went again. \u00a0The Daryl&#8217;s were picking on the baby chickens. \u00a0The baby chickens were all huddled on top of each other&#8230;cowering in the corner.<\/p>\n<p>I scolded the Daryl&#8217;s (They are two Rhode Island Reds) and we put the baby chickens back up on the roosting bar.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty soon, the Rover&#8217;s went upstairs. \u00a0Same development. \u00a0The Rover&#8217;s are three Black Astroloupe&#8217;s (sp?). \u00a0They are fussy chickens.<\/p>\n<p>Out we went again. \u00a0Repeated the same process.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Gretta, my Barred Rock hen went up the stairs. \u00a0We had stayed out for her. \u00a0She &#8220;rules the roost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now, we are back in the house. \u00a0I will go outdoors in a bit to check on things. \u00a0Those baby chickens need to stay outdoors.
