Today’s Run: \u00a08.00 miles<\/p>\n
Two nights ago my husband was up at early o’clock letting the cats out. \u00a0While doing this he observed a rather large opossum meandering on our back deck. \u00a0He tried whispering, “Shoo! \u00a0Shoo!” but the opossum was not impressed. \u00a0The opossum was not the least bit concerned about the cats either. \u00a0Cheeky thing!<\/p>\n
When I got up in the morning, my husband told me about the encounter. \u00a0I said, (and I do not want to offend anybody here with what I said), “You shot it. \u00a0Right!?!”<\/p>\n
“Well, no. \u00a0It was at 2:30 am! \u00a0What would the neighbors think of a gun going off at that time of day!”<\/p>\n
I replied, “I really am not concerned about the neighbors. \u00a0This is the country. \u00a0That would be fair play. \u00a0That thing had better not have got any of my chickens!”<\/p>\n
We went out about an hour later, early daylight, to move the chickens to a new location. \u00a0The chickens were not their usual perky selves. \u00a0They were subdued.<\/p>\n
I did not clue into this right away. \u00a0I should have.<\/p>\n
We relocated the chicken tractor. \u00a0Put up the fencing again. \u00a0The chickens just trudged along with us. \u00a0Usually they are high spirited when we do this. \u00a0Not this time. \u00a0“Hmmmm,” I thought.<\/p>\n
Everything was as it should be and I did my last “chore” and that was to collect the eggs. \u00a0I lifted the lid to the nesting boxes and was speechless. \u00a0There was one of my hens. \u00a0Deceased is a nice way to put it. \u00a0That nasty opossum had surprised her as she was laying an egg and had had fresh chicken for breakfast.<\/p>\n
I was angry! \u00a0I was seething!!!!<\/p>\n
How dare a predator get at my chickens. \u00a0I try very, very hard to keep them safe! \u00a0Oooooowwww, that opossum had better watch out.<\/p>\n
Last evening, I had MFH (My Favorite Husband) make an attachment to tie down the lid to the nesting boxes with a bungee chord. \u00a0Let us see an opossum open that! \u00a0Or a raccoon for that matter.<\/p>\n
When he was done with the bungee chord, I made sure that the trap was set. \u00a0I was seeing red.<\/p>\n
This morning, the first thing I did was check the trap. \u00a0Yup. \u00a0There, pacing rapidly back and forth was that nasty opossum. \u00a0Ha! \u00a0Gotcha!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
