Today’s Run: 7.33 miles<\/p>\n
Back in 1980 I was a Freshman in College. \u00a0Boy, that really dates me, does not it!?<\/p>\n
Way back then, in the stone ages, I had a favorite college professor. \u00a0We will call him Dr. “O.” \u00a0Dr. O was a very good teacher. \u00a0He was not intimidating or anything. \u00a0Very approachable. \u00a0Good communicator. \u00a0He was\/is one of the great ones.<\/p>\n
He was a tall, round man. \u00a0Pudgy even.<\/p>\n
The Fall of my Sophomore year, there was a new professor. \u00a0Tall and lanky. \u00a0Thin even. \u00a0It was Dr. O! \u00a0What had happened over the Summer?<\/p>\n
Running had happened.<\/p>\n
Then it came to me. \u00a0I could remember seeing him in sweats and Adidas shoes trudging around the campus. \u00a0Then jogging around the campus. \u00a0Gradually becoming more and more efficient in his running. \u00a0He trimmed down. \u00a0He was fit! \u00a0He was still the best professor in the school (IMO).<\/p>\n
Dr. O qualified for Boston! \u00a0Twice! \u00a0He did well! \u00a0YAY Dr. O! \u00a0The entire school was very proud of him. \u00a0With good reason, too.<\/p>\n
Well, the four years zoomed by and I graduated in May of 1984. \u00a0It is now almost 2014 and guess who I now have on my FB FL? \u00a0Yup~Dr. O. \u00a0He is now retired from teaching. \u00a0He lives about two hours away from me.<\/p>\n
Dr. O has been following my running career on FB.<\/p>\n
See, he planted a seed in my mind. \u00a0You can do anything you put your mind to. \u00a0I watched him struggle learning to run. \u00a0I watched him glide effortlessly around the campus a year later, a new man.<\/p>\n
Two years ago, I began running. \u00a0Dr. O was a role model to me in my running. \u00a0If he could do it, so could I. \u00a0Today, I posted my running totals of 2013 on FB. \u00a0This quiet man, the man who had challenged me in my chosen profession back in the early 1980’s and the man who challenged me in my running, commented on my post.<\/p>\n
This is his comment: \u00a0\u00a0Very impressed. Got a record for you to shoot for. Me\/1984: 4316 miles. \u00a0Still challenging me all these years later! \u00a0Go, Dr. O!!!<\/p>\n
