Today’s Run: \u00a04.21 miles<\/p>\n
We are a family who likes our gadgets. \u00a0I prefer my Vintage Radios and Victrola’s whereas my husband like REAL MEN electronics gadgets.<\/p>\n
Today found us driving our 1985 Ford F150 over to Mississippi State University. That is only about 25 miles from our house, not a huge distance so the drive was not the problem. \u00a0It was what we were getting that concerned me: \u00a0A Mass Spectrometer!<\/p>\n
“How big is it?” \u00a0I asked my husband. \u00a0“Um, big”, was his reply.<\/p>\n
“Will it fit in the pickup?” was my next question. \u00a0“I hope so.” he said.<\/p>\n
So, we drove to MSU and went through security, backed up to the loading dock and here comes this forklift with this very large, very tall…thing…on it. \u00a0Surly that is not the Mass Spectrometer! \u00a0Nope, it was just PART of the Mass Spectrometer.<\/p>\n
There were four components to this thing. \u00a0All of which involved the use of a forklift. \u00a0Now, granted, two of them a couple of guys could just lift onto the back of the truck but where’s the fun in that!?! \u00a0A forklift is much more cool!<\/p>\n
We loaded down the truck (literally) and drove home.<\/p>\n
My husband has unloaded the two smaller pieces but the two larger ones remain a dilemma. \u00a0We may have to gather a few people from our neighborhood and work together and get those things out of the back of the truck. \u00a0Should prove to be an interesting endeavor.<\/p>\n
Oh! \u00a0What is a Mass Spectrometer? \u00a0It is an analytical technique that produces\u00a0spectra<\/a>\u00a0(singular\u00a0spectrum<\/i>) of the masses of the molecules comprising a sample of material. The spectra are used to determine the elemental composition of a sample, the masses of particles and of\u00a0molecules<\/a>, and to elucidate the chemical structures of molecules, such as\u00a0peptides<\/a>\u00a0and other\u00a0chemical compounds<\/a>.
