Today’s Run: \u00a04.22 miles<\/p>\n
I just got off the phone a couple of minutes ago from the Veterinary Laboratory of Mississippi State University, Pearl Laboratory. \u00a0This is the location where they did the autopsy on my deceased hen.<\/p>\n
The news was not good news. \u00a0She had something called Marek’s Disease. \u00a0Marek’s disease<\/b>\u00a0is a highly contagious\u00a0viral<\/a>neoplastic<\/a>\u00a0disease in\u00a0chickens<\/a>. It is named afterJ\u00f3zsef Marek<\/a>, a Hungarian veterinarian. Occasionally misdiagnosed as an\u00a0abtissue pathology<\/a>\u00a0it is caused by an\u00a0alphaherpesvirus<\/a>\u00a0known as ‘Marek’s disease virus’ (MDV) or\u00a0Gallid herpesvirus 2<\/i>\u00a0(GaHV-2). The disease is characterized by the presence of\u00a0T cell<\/a>lymphoma<\/a>\u00a0as well as infiltration of\u00a0nerves<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0organs<\/a>by\u00a0lymphocytes<\/a>. (Wikipedia)<\/p>\n My hen had nerve infiltration and an abdominal mass. \u00a0She had been very sick. \u00a0She had also been sick when I purchased her. \u00a0And the\u00a0incubation period for this is approximately three weeks. \u00a0That means that my other hens are still at risk. \u00a0I need to have an eagle eye here the next week or so for a sick hen. \u00a0Right now, everyone seems healthy and happy but birds hide illness very well~until it is too late.<\/p>\n Chickens\/commercial chickens are supposed to be\u00a0inoculated\u00a0for Merak’s Disease. \u00a0That is the only known cure. \u00a0I do not think that the gentleman from whom I purchased these hens did any inoculation at all (or any worming for that matter~that is something I will have to do when their molt comes around.).<\/p>\n So, the next thing on my to-do list for today is to write the person from whom I purchased my chickens and deliver the bad news. \u00a0I really dislike doing things like this, but at least in writing, I am able to choose my words a bit more carefully and hopefully, NOT stick my foot in my mouth!<\/p>\n Wish me luck!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Today’s Run: \u00a04.22 miles I just got off the phone a couple of minutes ago from the Veterinary Laboratory of Mississippi State University, Pearl Laboratory. \u00a0This is the location where they did the autopsy on my deceased hen.
