{"id":1173,"date":"2013-02-15T02:34:48","date_gmt":"2013-02-15T02:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?p=1173"},"modified":"2013-02-15T02:34:48","modified_gmt":"2013-02-15T02:34:48","slug":"speaker-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?p=1173","title":{"rendered":"Speaker Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s Run: \u00a050 min lifting at the &#8220;Y&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My husband and I have been working on restoring a 1941 Silvertone\u00a0Consul\u00a0radio (model 7048 if you want to Google it). \u00a0We have been replacing capacitors and resistors and we completed that part of the restoration. \u00a0The next thing to tackle was the speaker itself.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker was quite frankly, a mess. \u00a0The cone was cracked and torn. \u00a0The coil had no &#8220;umph&#8221; &#8230;it needed help. \u00a0The first thing we did was look up how to re-come a speaker. \u00a0It is not as easy as one would think. \u00a0What we did find is people who want to sell you brand new (read: \u00a0expensive) speakers that will fit antique radios. \u00a0We will keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, my husband ran across a site that gave an answer that was almost too easy to believe (and we still are not sure if we believe it or not). \u00a0Thin down\u00a0Elmer&#8217;s Glue and take tissue paper. \u00a0Simply glue the tissue paper over the cracks of the cone! \u00a0Easy!!! \u00a0You can see from the photo how much\u00a0gluing we had to do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=1174\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1174\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1174\" alt=\"radio 1941 silvertone work 002\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-002.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-002.jpg 1600w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-002-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-002-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-002-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next thing regarding the speaker we found not to be ship shape was the coil. \u00a0It had a break in the wire. \u00a0Bad. \u00a0So, we &#8220;borrowed&#8221; (a different story all together) a spool of wire from an auto repair shop and today counted rolls of wire while we undid the broken wire and then\u00a0rewound the wire with the spool we &#8220;borrowed&#8221; the same amount of times. \u00a0Complicated.<\/p>\n<p>We reassemble the speaker and put in the new tubes and connected the entire thing to an isolation transformer and a serial light bulb. \u00a0These are two items that are supposed to protect your radio as you send current through it (they are supposed to keep you from frying the guts out of the radio while you are turning it on for the first couple of times).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=1175\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1175\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1175\" alt=\"radio 1941 silvertone work 004\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-004.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-004.jpg 1600w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-004-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-004-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/radio-1941-silvertone-work-004-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Did it work!?! \u00a0Alas, no. \u00a0We heard some static from the speaker!!! \u00a0So, our efforts there may have been a success but we still have work to do. \u00a0Back to the drawing board I believe is how the saying goes&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s Run: \u00a050 min lifting at the &#8220;Y&#8221; My husband and I have been working on restoring a 1941 Silvertone\u00a0Consul\u00a0radio (model 7048 if you want to Google it). \u00a0We have been replacing capacitors and resistors and we completed that part of the restoration. \u00a0The next thing to tackle was the speaker itself.
