{"id":1084,"date":"2013-01-22T21:27:30","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T21:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?p=1084"},"modified":"2013-01-22T21:28:19","modified_gmt":"2013-01-22T21:28:19","slug":"bees-and-fire-ants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?p=1084","title":{"rendered":"Bees and Fire Ants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s Run: \u00a045 min lifting at the &#8220;Y&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Today my husband and I walked out to the visit the apiary. \u00a0What we saw has us a little bit concerned.<\/p>\n<p>In front of the middle hive, there is the largest fire ant colony I have ever seen. \u00a0And there is a trail of ants going up and down the hive. \u00a0This is not good. \u00a0So, I &#8220;Googled&#8221; it.<\/p>\n<p>What I found was an article from a fellow beekeeper from the Delta. \u00a0It is a blog entry from 2009 dealing with this specific issue and it is not good news.<\/p>\n<p>He was examining a bee hive and dropped a frame of bees and brood, well actually threw the frame back into the hive. \u00a0Now every beekeeper knows that you keep a good grip on everything associated with a bee hive. \u00a0Why did he do this? \u00a0Both of his hands were covered with stinging fire ants! \u00a0He has fire ants living IN his bee hives! \u00a0The fire ants were establishing colonies between the outer and inner covers of the bee hives.<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to control an invasive critter. \u00a0There are few ways to mechanically control fire ants. \u00a0The live deep in the soil. \u00a0There are insecticides available for use and they may be effective but there is always the possibility that they will become\u00a0resistant to them. \u00a0Boo.<\/p>\n<p>So~tomorrow, when it is a little warmer, we will open the hives. \u00a0I put some insecticide on the ant hill. \u00a0Hope it does not kill the bees, too. \u00a0It is difficult to know how to treat\u00a0situations\u00a0like this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/?attachment_id=1085\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1085\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1085\" alt=\"middle hive with fire ant hill 001\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/middle-hive-with-fire-ant-hill-001.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/middle-hive-with-fire-ant-hill-001.jpg 1600w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/middle-hive-with-fire-ant-hill-001-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/middle-hive-with-fire-ant-hill-001-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/TM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/middle-hive-with-fire-ant-hill-001-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s Run: \u00a045 min lifting at the &#8220;Y&#8221; Today my husband and I walked out to the visit the apiary. \u00a0What we saw has us a little bit concerned.
