[Today’s run 3.6 miles]<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I got started with my run this morning there were two waves of dark clouds that blew through on a gusty wind. And after that everything was cooler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the course of the day it warmed back up some. But I don’t think we ever got close to the recent highs in temperature and humidity. This week here in Iowa has been a lot like the recent weather in Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don’t like hot weather. I like wearing clothes: long sleeves, long pants, a light jacket, a cap. Sixty five degrees with lots of sun and I would be in hog heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tomorrow I fly back to Mississippi where my regular work desk is, along with the cat who assumes if I am sitting down that must mean I’m ready to attend whatever whim enters his noggin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Sunday we are supposed to see Freddy the concrete man as he sets the forms for our driveway expansion project. And I will probably mow the lawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yesterday I rose early and drove up to Dubuque (a bit more than 3 hours).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I drove by the old house and saw that the little tree I transplanted into the front yard is doing well. That was a nice surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The security desk guy at the front entrance of the plant had to resurrect my company id card since it had not been used in over a year. But my boss showed up at that time, and the card was repaired and the day got off to a good start. I had a list of people to meet, whom I have seen in daily Teams meetings but had never met in person. That was quickly done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rest of the day I spent on my laptop at a borrowed desk working on the same project I had started at the end of last week while at home. I think I checked my phone for email and facebook one time, when I went to the restroom. Otherwise I was blissfully focused on the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After work I drove to Cedar Rapids and had dinner with my old college roommate. We had an interesting and somewhat wistful conversation. Not nostalgic, but more like wondering why things didn’t turn out exactly as we expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For my part, having spent a week with elders it has been a bit of a reminder that the clock is ticking. And for his part, some recent medical news probably has him in the same position. I think we are both too old for a mid-life crisis, so it’s time to prune and choose and find the “wisdom to know the difference” between what we want and what can actually be in our power, as it says in the serenity prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
