They bite hard!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been known to stop and break a leafy twig from a tree by the road in order to shoo them away.\u00a0 I&#8217;d much rather smack myself than be bitten.<\/p>\n<p>They make a variety of sticky strips you can put on the back of your hat (I&#8217;ve provided a picture borrowed from amazon.com).\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve never gotten into that.\u00a0 I put some Off on the back of my head and on my shoulders.\u00a0 And I carry a bandana or twig to swipe at them.<\/p>\n<p>But this year the hoard has not (yet) arrived.\u00a0 There are some traditions I am happy to forgo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51nGoOHq-EL.jpg\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[today&#8217;s run: 3.5 miles] It seems we have made it through the month of June without our usual outbreak of deer flies.\u00a0 The pesky things usually would come in a wave by this time and drive me batty while running.
