{"id":5648,"date":"2016-12-22T20:18:40","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T02:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=5648"},"modified":"2016-12-22T20:23:11","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T02:23:11","slug":"fm-modulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=5648","title":{"rendered":"FM Modulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 3.5 miles]<\/p>\n<p>One of my recent auction purchase is an automatic FM modulation meter.<\/p>\n<p>FM stands for Frequency Modulation.\u00a0 Which means that the frequency of the signal changes from some nominal value in order to carry the information to be transferred.\u00a0 In layman&#8217;s terms, the frequency of the signal wobbles away from the central frequency, with a &#8220;louder&#8221; signal being a bigger wobble.\u00a0 The &#8220;speed&#8221; of change of the wobbles would be the musical note, and the spread of the wobbles would be the loudness.\u00a0 The actual strength of the FM carrier itself stays the same all of the time.\u00a0 It is these frequency excursions that contain the information.<\/p>\n<p>(I think I have that right&#8230;\u00a0 I always find modulation to be a bit of a mind-bender.)<\/p>\n<p>As you can imagine, most FM broadcasters would love their signal to be louder than everyone else&#8217;s and have a big fat wobble.\u00a0 But then they would be bumping into other stations on either side and it would be messy.<\/p>\n<p>For our little FM station we want to have as much modulation as we are legally allowed to have, but not any more than that.<\/p>\n<p>I have done some measurements with the spectrum analyzer to make sure we were in the neighborhood of good.\u00a0 Now I have an actual modulation meter.\u00a0 A quick check seemed to indicate we were doing pretty well.\u00a0 I need\u00a0 to a) find the manual for the thing online and read it, then b) do a true measurement and tweak our signal as necessary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 3.5 miles] One of my recent auction purchase is an automatic FM modulation meter.
