{"id":5112,"date":"2015-11-08T14:44:19","date_gmt":"2015-11-08T20:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=5112"},"modified":"2015-11-08T14:53:16","modified_gmt":"2015-11-08T20:53:16","slug":"resonance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=5112","title":{"rendered":"Resonance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 5 miles]<\/p>\n<p>First run since last week&#8230; went well.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I went to Batesville, Mississippi to cheer on my wife at a 10 mile run.<\/p>\n<p>While I was there I sat at the finish line and watched people come in.\u00a0 I was on a walkway in front of stores, above the road level.\u00a0 A kid spent some time kicking the pipe railing at a place where it had been cut.\u00a0 He was enjoying it.\u00a0 The thing would really vibrate. It was possibly moving half an inch in amplitude.\u00a0 What he didn&#8217;t notice was that another loose end of similar size at the other end of the railing would respond in a resonant manner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=5113\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5113\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_085019715_HDR.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151107_085019715_HDR\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=5114\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5114\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_085025829_HDR-700x394.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151107_085025829_HDR\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=5115\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5115\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_085030796_HDR.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151107_085030796_HDR\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My pictures don&#8217;t fit together, unfortunately.\u00a0 Pretend that the last picture is up on the right end of the other two. The vertical, ornamented pillar in picture #2 is the same one as in picture #3.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the really interesting part is that the lower-rail pipe piece that he was kicking actually was cut, with a big air gap around that post, between the place where he was kicking and the place where the resonant shaking happened.\u00a0 The smaller hanging-ended pieces did not appear to shake; must not have been resonant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 5 miles] First run since last week&#8230; went well.
