{"id":4836,"date":"2015-06-23T06:27:09","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T11:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4836"},"modified":"2015-06-23T06:56:41","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T11:56:41","slug":"old-laptop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4836","title":{"rendered":"Old laptop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[today&#8217;s run: &#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m out at the HQ again, and had the opportunity to stop by daughter&#8217;s place in Loveland for a bit.\u00a0 We ate some dinner and then I worked on her laptop.<\/p>\n<p>The neighbor gave her this laptop.\u00a0 It is not a bad machine.\u00a0 It had a bunch of bloatware on it which I slowly cleared out.\u00a0 And it had not had a Windows update in about 3 years so I worked on that.\u00a0 It was getting late, so I brought it back to the hotel with me to finish the numerous updates.<\/p>\n<p>But, then it started dying on me.\u00a0 It would run for about 10 minutes than go completely power-off.\u00a0 It even did that while in the BIOS setup screen.<\/p>\n<p>A bit of googling, and it seems that these machines would do that if they over heat.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t feel hot.\u00a0 I suspect the heatsink is probably gummed up and the thermal grease is hardened and the thing just isn&#8217;t able to dissipate the normal amount of heat.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to see if I can find a small screwdriver today at Harbor Freight or somewhere, and see if the remaining Radio Shack stores around may have the thermal grease.<\/p>\n<p>I am not a big-time laptop mechanic.\u00a0 But there are some videos online about how to take this one apart.<\/p>\n<p>If I can get it to run reliably, it also needs a memory upgrade and would really benefit with an SSD hard drive, if we get that far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[today&#8217;s run: &#8230;] I&#8217;m out at the HQ again, and had the opportunity to stop by daughter&#8217;s place in Loveland for a bit.\u00a0 We ate some dinner and then I worked on her laptop.
