{"id":4795,"date":"2015-04-26T09:54:47","date_gmt":"2015-04-26T14:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4795"},"modified":"2015-04-26T09:54:47","modified_gmt":"2015-04-26T14:54:47","slug":"ham-radio-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4795","title":{"rendered":"Ham radio club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Yesterday: 5 miles]<\/p>\n<p>I did a couple of good deeds for the <a href=\"http:\/\/locoarc.org\">ham radio club<\/a> this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday evening I climbed up the tower to remove an old business band VHF antenna.\u00a0 I had never been up this tower before.\u00a0 It is a non-guyed model, starts wider at the bottom with bolt-together pieces and then transitions to solid-rod welded sections for the top.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t look very impressive as I was going up.\u00a0 But once I was up there and strapped in, it was solid and I had no trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Getting the VHF antenna down was a challenge.\u00a0\u00a0 I thought the thing looked to be about 10 feet long but I was off by a long shot.\u00a0 It was a 21-foot folded dipole array, probably a Decibel Products DB-224; not real heavy, but kind of difficult to manage when you are standing at the top of the tower.<\/p>\n<p>But I did get it down and get myself down and all done before dark.\u00a0 So I count it as a win.<\/p>\n<p>Then earlier this morning I went in with my tools and worked on the door to our meeting room.\u00a0 It is a cheap hollow-core 2-hinge door and the bottom hinge was no longer holding; the door was cracked and the hinge screws were falling out.
