I received a nice letter from a foundation attached to a large factory near here.\u00a0 I had applied for a grant toward getting Classic Book Radio up and running.\u00a0 They said no.<\/p>\n
I also took a moment to go to another corporate foundation’s website to check on my\u00a0 on-line application there:\u00a0 denied.<\/p>\n
So that gives us four denials, one potentially positive reply and\u00a0 about a dozen just silence.<\/p>\n
I feel like I am not doing this right.\u00a0 Like, maybe there is a secret code or handshake or some particular word I’m supposed to say.<\/p>\n
Probably it is more likely that I’m just trying something new and untested ideas are harder to get behind than Red Cross or United Way.<\/p>\n
It’s a bit depressing.\u00a0 It’s not a _lot_ depressing because we still have some requests out there and because I have a few more foundations on my list that I can apply to.\u00a0 In the final analysis it is not depressing because I’m just giving it my best shot and the results are as Providence will have them.<\/p>\n
I was supposed to go for a run today but now it is too dark.\u00a0 My backup plan for dealing with disappointment is a nice hot bath and a book.<\/p>\n
I think, when we do get a backer, it will be someone who has faith in our idea.\u00a0 And I can make that known in our underwriting announcements.\u00a0 Faith should be rewarded, don’t you think?<\/p>\n
I’m not really a very entrepreneurial person so this is new territory for me.\u00a0 I am reminded of my college days.\u00a0 I lived in a dorm my sophomore year and there was a guy at the end of spring semester who pasted up on the outside, hallway side,\u00a0 of his dorm room door all of the rejection letters he was getting from his job applications.\u00a0 They called them “flush letters” then.\u00a0 They were nice letters, perfunctory and impersonal but polite.\u00a0 And that’s OK, that’s the kind of letter expected on such occasions.\u00a0 I thought it was somewhat classy of him to post them all\u00a0 (assuming he did!) and make a bit of an entertainment out of it, some lemonade from the lemons.<\/p>\n
I don’t think it is appropriate for me to follow that particular line so I’m going to keep most of our denial letters in a folder and not post them.\u00a0 But maybe we will have some other way to celebrate the struggle later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
