{"id":4592,"date":"2014-11-10T19:27:19","date_gmt":"2014-11-11T01:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4592"},"modified":"2014-11-10T19:27:19","modified_gmt":"2014-11-11T01:27:19","slug":"magnetic-rotational-encoder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4592","title":{"rendered":"magnetic rotational encoder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Saturday: 6 miles; today 3.4 miles]<\/p>\n<p>I had been playing with the Si5351A board from NT7S in conjunction with an Arduino Nano, LCD and surplus optical encoder which was given to me long ago by K0OJ from out of an Yaesu HF radio.<\/p>\n<p>I had been thinking more about the optical encoder and did some googling and found this magnetic encoder at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.madscientisthut.com\/Shopping\/agora.cgi?cart_id=3917174.3608&amp;product=CNC%20\/%20Robotic%20Sensors&amp;user4=Rotary%20Encoder&amp;xm=on\">Mad Scientist Hut<\/a> which included a little circuit break-out board with the magic chip and a magnet, all for about the same cost as a cheap optical encoder.\u00a0 So I ordered that and it came the other day.<\/p>\n<p>In my junk box I happen to have a weighted knob\/flywheel from an old stereo receiver.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember which brand or model, probably something from the 70&#8217;s.\u00a0 It did have a dial string arrangement.\u00a0 Well, I dug that thing out and used a bit of bathtub caulk to mount the magnet on the end just right.\u00a0 And I used some scrap aluminum to build a bit of a test jig for the magic chip.\u00a0 You have to have the chip within a few mm of the magnet.\u00a0 The rest wires up just like an optical encoder.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t even change my Arduino code.<\/p>\n<p>I like the feel of the heavy flywheel knob.\u00a0 Pretty smooth.\u00a0 With this setup I get just over 10 kHz per knob rotation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=4593\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4593\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4593\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_20141110_191140_180-700x393.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20141110_191140_180\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_20141110_191140_180-700x393.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_20141110_191140_180-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Saturday: 6 miles; today 3.4 miles] I had been playing with the Si5351A board from NT7S in conjunction with an Arduino Nano, LCD and surplus optical encoder which was given to me long ago by K0OJ from out of an Yaesu HF radio.
